Who would have thought an October engagement session in Missouri would come with temperatures in the 90s? It may have felt more like the middle of July than a beautiful fall evening, but Sydney and Lane certainly didn’t let the heat put a damper on their fun! I had the sweetest time strolling around Jefferson City with these two, capturing their love and getting to know a little more about the story that brought them together.
From the moment we started their session, I knew it was going to be such a fun evening! Sydney has one of the most contagious laughs and the prettiest smile, and Lane knows exactly how to bring both of them out! I absolutely loved watching the two of them interact. Whether Lane was making Sydney laugh or they were simply enjoying a quiet moment together, their connection felt so natural and effortless!
And honestly, those are some of my favorite moments to photograph. The little in between moments when couples forget about the camera, let their personalities shine, and simply enjoy being together. Sydney and Lane made that part of my job so easy!
As we wandered around Jefferson City, I got to hear more about their love story, and let me tell you, it’s a cute one!
Sydney and Lane actually go all the way back to high school! Throughout those four years, they shared several classes, had mutual friends, and often found themselves hanging out with the same group of people. But it wasn’t until their senior year that things started to change. According to Sydney, it was almost like a switch flipped! Lane started showing a little more interest in her, and he and his best friend Adam were constantly teasing her. Eventually, Sydney started to catch on that there might be something more going on!
Of course, being part of the graduating class of 2020 meant their senior year looked a little different than they had imagined. When the world shut down that March, Sydney and Lane kept in touch through Snapchat. And despite all the uncertainty of that spring, they still managed to find ways to spend time together. One of those ways? Helping their friend Adam fix up a Cadillac he had purchased! I mean, who would have thought that hanging out in a garage working on a car would help spark a love story? After a few months of talking and several weeks of spending time together, Lane finally worked up the courage to ask Sydney out! And his approach was pretty hilarious! “You wanna hang out sometime without Adam?” I absolutely love that!
Their first official date was May 15, 2020, at Elespolon on Eastland. And while they were both excited to finally spend time together without their friends, the nerves were definitely there! Sydney remembers Lane fidgeting with his shirt throughout the entire date, insisting that it was incredibly itchy. Meanwhile, Sydney was so nervous herself that when the bill came, she actually tried to pay for her own meal! Their first date may have been short and filled with nervous little moments, but it was the beginning of something pretty special.
And here’s another part of their story that made me laugh! For the first month and a half that Sydney and Lane were going on dates, Lane was telling his family he was hanging out with Adam! Poor Adam was apparently the perfect cover story!
Fast forward more than six years, and here these two are, getting ready to begin one of the most exciting chapters of their lives together!
I think there’s something especially sweet about couples who have known each other since high school. They’ve had the opportunity to grow up alongside one another, make memories through so many different seasons, and watch each other become the people they are today.
And after spending the evening with Sydney and Lane, one thing was especially clear to me, these two genuinely enjoy each other’s company! Even with the unusually hot October temperatures, there wasn’t a shortage of smiles, laughter, or sweet moments between them. I loved how Lane could make Sydney laugh with seemingly no effort at all, and how her whole face would light up when he did. Their personalities complement each other so beautifully, and their happiness together is something you can truly see in their photographs!
Sydney and Lane, thank you so much for spending this incredibly warm October evening with me! You two are seriously as sweet as can be, and I had the best time wandering around Jefferson City, laughing with you, and hearing about the beginning of your love story. I’m so excited for you both and cannot wait to capture even more memories as you begin this next chapter together!
