Abby + Dylan | Westphalia, Missouri Engagement Session

We cannot say enough great things about Abby and Dylan!  These two are such a darling pair.  We thoroughly enjoyed every second we had with them at their session!  We had been planning for their engagement session for months, so when the day finally arrived and it was extremely dark and cloudy with a chance for storms around the session time, we knew we needed to reschedule.  We are so glad we made that decision, because the light we had on Friday was perfection all evening!  Abby and Dylan are such an organized couple!  They had been scouting locations on Dylan’s family farm to make sure we stopped at all the best spots.  They mapped everything out and even came prepared with a ladder so we could easily cross over a barbed wire fence.  We were so impressed with just how prepared they were for everything!

There’s no doubt the Berhorst Farm is breathtakingly beautiful!  large spans of rolling hills, wide open fields with tall grass gently blowing in the spring breeze, and creek beds made our evening spectacular.  The pretty spring light (which is our absolute favorite) poured through the branches and hit the tops of tall grass all evening.  This is the kind of golden light photographers dream of, and we had it all evening long!  Abby and Dylan definitely knew what they were doing when they selected the locations for us to photograph.  Every spot they choose showcased the property in all its glory!  These are the kind of sessions we live for!  We couldn’t get enough of Abby and Dylan, and every snap of the shutter, had us so excited!  Dylan’s mom, sister, and nephew came along for the majority of the session had us laughing a lot of the time.  His mom has such a light hearted and fun sense of humor.  We enjoyed their hospitality and loved how they welcomed us to their property with open arms!  From beginning to end, our time with Abby and Dylan couldn’t have gone better.

We first officially met Abby and Dylan at their session, and it was very clear to us early on that these two are a match made in heaven.  You can tell that these two still get butterflies around one another, and it’s the sweetest thing to see!  The way they look at each other with such loving eyes is adorable.  We love their giddiness and pure, genuine happiness they both exude when they are around each other.  We had so much fun with Abby and Dylan, we are counting down the days until their October wedding day, so we can have them back in front of our camera.

Their Love Story

Abby and Dylan share one sweet love story that goes all the way back to their high school days!  They both attended the same high school so they knew of each other for awhile. The first time Abby remembers seeing Dylan for the first time, was at a hayride during her freshman year of high school.  She remembers Dylan and his friend stopping by at the hayride for a short amount of time before leaving.  Abby’s mom quickly told her that Dylan seemed like a nice kid and encouraged her to talk to him.  Throughout their time in high school, they had several of the same classes together and she would see him in the school halls. However, it wasn’t until January 6-7, 2012 (the end of Abby’s sophomore year and Dylan’s junior year) that they truly met and talked for the first time.

While attending the homecoming game, Abby got up for a bit to talk to her sister who was sitting on the other side of the gym. As Abby made her way back to her seat in the student section, she realized that Dylan had given her seat up to someone else. They started texting immediately, joking around about the fact that Dylan gave Abby’s seat up to someone else. The homecoming dance was the next night, and Abby would be attending the dance with a mutual friend.  She remembers not being able to get Dylan off her mind Friday night, and all day Saturday, the two texted!    After the homecoming dance, Abby, Dylan, and their mutual friend went road tripping until 3 am. They finally got to Abby’s parents house where they all sat at the kitchen table for hours and talked. After they left, Abby’s mom mentioned once again that she thought the Berhorst boy might like Abby. It was no doubt at that point that Abby knew she wanted to be with Dylan.  The two would talk for the next several weeks before making things official.

After homecoming night, they began talking every day at school and on the phone. The next couple of weekends after homecoming, they hung out each weekend.  In January of 2012, Abby and Dylan set up a date to go four wheeler riding at Wade’s road with a group of mutual friends. The whole time they were four wheeler riding, they truly enjoyed being together. After hours and hours of riding, they went to eat dinner and then it was off to get ice cream at Dairy Queen.  They ended the evening back at Dylan’s parents home where they began watching Sherlock Homes. During the movie, is when he decided it was time to ask Abby to be his girlfriend.

Both Abby and Dylan knew from the get go that they had found “the one.”  They enjoyed the same types of things, they got butterflies around each other that still haven’t gone away to this day, and they get along with each others families. They say, when you know you know! and Abby and Dylan realized early on that they belonged together.

How He Asked

Dylan and Abby had been talking about wanting to go to Colorado to go skiing and snowmobiling for awhile.  In August 2018, they began talking about going for a week in the winter. Abby asked her sister and her boyfriend (now fiancé) if they wanted to go to Colorado with them in December, and they agreed right away to go. They began officially planning for the  trip in September.  In November, Abby’s parents decided they would also like to come along on the trip, so they made plans for the six of them to head to Colorado in early December. The day had finally come for them to leave for the big trip.  They had a full week packed with different events and things they were going to do like skiing for two days, snowmobiling, and touring town, and the areas around Breckenridge, CO.

On day two of the trip, Abby found a spot called Lake Dillon Reservoir to sight see!  Abby, her family, and Dylan drove to the sight seeing destination Abby had picked out.  When they arrived, Abby’s mom said they needed to take a family picture. After the family picture, Abby and Dylan decided to take a couple photo.  Abby  was completely oblivious and had no idea what was about to occur as she was trying to fix her hair for the photo.  As she fiddled with her hair, Abby saw Dylan pulling something out of his pocket and turning to her to get down on one knee. Abby  was so in shock that when Dylan said, “Abby will you marry me?” She just shook her head yes a million times!  Her family and Dylan still laugh at her because she just shook her head yes instead of verbally saying yes!  They were on top of the world and so happy in that moment!  December 8 was their YES day, and became even more special, because Abby and Dylan became an aunt and uncle to their first nephew about the same time Dylan got down on one knee to propose! What a special day for the Berhorst family to gain a soon to be daughter-in-law, and and a grandson!

After the engagement, Abby found out that Dylan had told Amber back in September when she picked him up after a bachelor party that he would need help picking out a ring. Months went by and Amber said nothing more until the week before opening day of deer season. Abby was at work one evening and with her busy nurse schedule, she didn’t get home until late at night, so Dylan and Amber met in Columbia to go find the perfect ring. Amber gave Dylan ideas, but when they arrived to look at rings, it wasn’t the one he wanted. So opening day of deer season (Dylan is a big hunter) Dylan told Abby he was going hunting while she was in St. Louis. However, that day of hunting turned into spending the day designing Abby’s ring. Opening day of deer season Dylan’s hunt was over, because he had the perfect ring that he would give Abby in front of her family while in Colorado. What a sweet guy to give up a day of deer hunting to find the perfect ring for his future bride!

This just goes to show what a sweet guy Dylan is and how much Abby truly means to him!  These two are one cute couple and we couldn’t be any more excited for them!  Enjoy some of our favorites from their beautiful spring session at the Berhorst family farm!  There were so many to choose from, we had such a hard time narrowing it down for this post!
